INSTALLATION / VIDEO

Our Power
Video installation
2017
A community piece where people are asked to write down on a piece of paper "something that they want to overcome personally or as a community," present it to the camera, and then crush the paper into a fist of power. The crushed papers are then put on the wall surrounding the video display; this signifies our collective strength as a community to overcome our struggles together. Videos can be posted and submitted via Instagram using #OurPowerProject.

Audio Installation
2016
From July 12, 2015 to July 12, 2016 in the
United States, 44 un armed or disputedly armed/ unarmed Black individuals were killed by gunshot at the hands of police officers. The recorded live audio of 44 gunshots and the physical shells
of each bullet creates an isolated endurance meditation in the false safety of the gallery space.

stay out of the sun:
a colonized consciousness
Video installation
2016
A multi-screen video installation of self-inflicted body performances that challenge the Filipin@/
Filipin@-American post-colonial idolism of “whiteness” and Western ideals, and the
pressures to assimilate to said “whiteness”
that exist within Filipin@ society.
The performances are prompted by the artist’s personal experiences and observations of her own Filipina-American identity. Her body is exposed, compartmentalized, and self-inflicted
to take back control of the body from colonial influences, while at the same time confronting the Filipin@ colonial mentality.

Gender's Diary, Ep. 1
2014
Video piece for SPACETIME CANVAS experimental video exhibition
Men are asked about their first experiences of love and losing
love. I embody their stories through
lip-syncing as a way of internalizing
the cis-male experience while
challenging societal gender constructs.

Cándida 2015
Cándida (Candace) Curtis-Cavazos is a young woman, poet, and teacher from Southwest Detroit. Hip hop is her culture. Educating youth is her mission. And poetry is her art. A "poet by the people," she calls herself, and over one month of working with Cándida I recorded her journey as a rising female poet.

Street Photography in Paris, France 2015
For six weeks I photographed the streets
of Paris, France with a class led by Professor David Turnley. During my stay,
I observed a whole new set of social structures and issues different than the ones I knew in the United States: race relations in an international community,
the wisdom and angst of youth growing
up in French society, the pushing out
of minorities from the city and into the suburbs. I studied these with my camera.
Autumn Augustine and Bryan Jones: The U.S. Army ROTC 2014

In 2014, Autumn Augustine and Bryan Jones were cadets in the University of Michigan Army ROTC. I spent two months photographing the Autumn, Bryan, and their battalion. As I got to know the both
of them, their journeys paralled and contrasted from one another in many ways. The goal of these photos was to capture the spirit, aspirations, fears, and bravery Autumn and Bryan have as young people who have chosen a future to serve their country.

PUBLIC ART

Public Portraiture
2013
A public "street-art" intervention offering free portraits to passersby. These portraits are drawn directly onto my
body as a way of experiencing the sensation of sharing identities with
others by transfering their likeness
as a layer onto my own likeness.

Public Car
(audio not included)
2013
A public installation exploring the idea of taking the private space (in this case, the privacy of a car) and placing it in the public space.
Audio of re-enacted private conversations I have had in a car play from the surrounding speakers. When sitting within the deconstructed car interior the voices move within the sound field as if they are coming from the front, middle, and back seats. The audio is also audible to passersby outside of the installation.
